        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JANUARY 28, 1997

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Memorializing the loss of the Honorable Paul Efthemios Tsongas
     2     to the citizens of the United States of America.

     3     WHEREAS, Senator Paul Tsongas, son of a Greek immigrant,
     4  represented the American values of family, community, hard work,
     5  honesty and integrity; and
     6     WHEREAS, These values were evident in Senator Tsongas' public
     7  service career as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ethiopia, deputy
     8  assistant attorney general in Massachusetts, city councilman in
     9  Lowell, Massachusetts, Middlesex County commissioner, United
    10  States Congressman and Senator and as a Presidential candidate
    11  in the 1992 Democratic primary; and
    12     WHEREAS, Senator Tsongas' commitment to his country and
    13  community are evidenced by his service on several boards and
    14  institutes, such as the Massachusetts Board of Regents of Higher
    15  Education, the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, the Recycling
    16  Advisory Council and the International Institute for Energy
    17  Conservation and by his authorship of several books about


     1  national affairs; and
     2     WHEREAS, Senator Tsongas' commitment to reducing the Federal
     3  budget deficit has had a lasting impression on the Democratic
     4  Party and the nation as a whole; and
     5     WHEREAS, Senator Tsongas' commitment to deficit reduction is
     6  further evidenced in his writings and through his founding and
     7  participation in the Concord Coalition, a bipartisan group
     8  committed to the reduction of the Federal deficit; and
     9     WHEREAS, Senator Tsongas' legislative achievements included
    10  securing the Federal Government's aid to the then bankrupt
    11  Chrysler Corporation, making his hometown, Lowell,
    12  Massachusetts, the site of the nation's first urban national
    13  park and a model for urban renewal, and being an outspoken
    14  advocate of human rights; therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives remember and
    16  memorialize the Honorable Paul Efthemios Tsongas for his
    17  achievements and contributions to the United States of America.
