INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JUNE 26, 1996
A RESOLUTION 1 Declaring August 4 through 10, 1996, as "Lyme Disease Awareness 2 Week" in this Commonwealth. 3 WHEREAS, Lyme disease is a bacterial infection carried by 4 deer ticks and is caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, Lyme disease poses a threat to the quality of life 7 of many Pennsylvanians, with incidents increasing dramatically 8 over the past few years to the point that 6,137 cases have been 9 reported; and 10 WHEREAS, The only way to acquire Lyme disease is to be bitten 11 by a tick that carries lyme disease; and 12 WHEREAS, Lyme disease is preventable if caution is taken 13 while engaged in outdoor activities from late spring through
1 November; and 2 WHEREAS, The early detection and treatment of Lyme disease 3 can greatly reduce the diverse and chronic symptoms that can 4 affect every organ of the body; therefore be it 5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare August 4 6 through 10, 1996, as "Lyme Disease Awareness Week" in this 7 Commonwealth in an effort to benefit the health of the citizens 8 of this Commonwealth by making them aware of Lyme disease.
