        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           SEPTEMBER 19, 1995

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of September 1995 as "Childhood Cancer
     2     Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Dramatic progress has been made in the early
     4  diagnosis and treatment of cancer and, as a result, young cancer
     5  victims and their families no longer need to relinquish their
     6  dreams for the future; and
     7     WHEREAS, Child deaths from cancer in the United States
     8  declined 60% since 1950; and
     9     WHEREAS, Despite such encouraging progress, cancer is the
    10  leading cause of death in children between the ages of 3 and 14,
    11  affecting 76,000 children annually; and


     1     WHEREAS, Families facing the specter of childhood cancer need
     2  the best possible medical and emotional support that can be
     3  provided; and
     4     WHEREAS, Young cancer patients need financial help,
     5  understanding and compassion and the opportunity to express and
     6  pursue the dreams that are the hallmark of their childhood;
     7  therefore be it
     8     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
     9  dedication and hard work of scientists, health care
    10  professionals and volunteer organizations who are working to
    11  overcome childhood cancer and assist its victims; and be it
    12  further
    13     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express
    14  admiration and support for the courageous youngsters and parents
    15  who struggle with this disease; and be it further
    16     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    17  month of September 1995 as "Childhood Cancer Month" in
    18  Pennsylvania.
