A RESOLUTION 1 Congratulating the West Chester Community Center on its 75th 2 Anniversary. 3 WHEREAS, In 1919, a group of concerned citizens led by Dr. 4 Leslie Pinckney Hill, then President of the Cheyney Training 5 School for Teachers, filed incorporation papers and acquired a 6 tract of land for future use; and 7 WHEREAS, In 1934, the Center Committee erected a building on 8 the property which contained a gymnasium, activity rooms and an 9 office; and 10 WHEREAS, In 1950, a large community pool was added; and 11 WHEREAS, From 1934 to 1974, the primary users of the facility 12 were African-Americans, and the Center was used for art 13 exhibits, teas, receptions and sporting events; and 14 WHEREAS, In 1975, the Center was completely reconstructed 15 with a large gymnasium, social room and offices, with funding 16 provided by citizens, businesses, foundations and major 17 corporations, one of the most significant interracial efforts
1 since the founding of the Center; and 2 WHEREAS, The present West Chester Community Center has a 3 campus of about four acres and an olympic-size outdoor pool and 4 bathhouse facility, which was completely renovated in 1990. It 5 is the only outdoor pool serving the Borough of West Chester; 6 therefore be it 7 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the 8 West Chester Community on the 75th Anniversary of the founding 9 of its Community Center and wish it continued success in all 10 future endeavors.
