A RESOLUTION 1 Declaring December 6 through 12, 1993, as "Melanoma Awareness 2 Week" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Annually approximately 600,000 Americans are newly 4 diagnosed with skin cancer, making this the most common form of 5 the disease; and 6 WHEREAS, Of the three main types of skin cancer, basal cell 7 and squamous cell carcinomas are rarely life-threatening, while 8 melanoma, if not detected early and treated rapidly, is prone to 9 spread and is usually fatal; and 10 WHEREAS, Approximately 32,000 cases of melanoma are newly 11 diagnosed each year with an average fatality rate of 12 approximately 6,700 persons annually; and 13 WHEREAS, Melanoma, while dangerous and life-threatening, can, 14 with early detection, be successfully treated; and
1 WHEREAS, Early detection of melanoma is initially dependent 2 on personal self-examination of the skin, with particular 3 emphasis on moles, it is incumbent upon each Pennsylvanian, to 4 learn the early signs of potential melanoma conditions; 5 therefore be it 6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare December 7 6 through 12, 1993, as "Melanoma Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania 8 with particular emphasis on educating the public to the dangers 9 of, the signs of and the prevention of melanoma.
