                                  A RESOLUTION

1 Commemorating the occasion of the bicentennial celebration of
     2 Landisburg.

3 WHEREAS, Abraham Landis, a resident of Cocalico Township in
4 Lancaster County, on May 25, 1783, obtained from the land office
5 a warrant for 116 acres of land along the Montour Creek in
     6 Cumberland County; and
7 WHEREAS, Abraham Landis never visited his holdings in
8 Shermans Valley but only bought the land for speculative
9 purposes and in 1793 hired John McClure, a local teacher, to
10 survey a part of the land into 72 lots which were to be sold by
11 lottery. There was a stipulation that within three years, each
12 owner would be required to construct a two-story house with a
13 stone or brick chimney; and
14 WHEREAS, In the year 1820 when Perry was established as a
15 county, Landisburg was chosen to be the temporary seat of
16 justice until a permanent site could be selected. A building of
17 log construction located at the corner of Water and Carlisle

1 Streets was refitted to meet the requirements for a temporary
     2 courthouse; and
3 WHEREAS, The town of Landisburg was incorporated on December
4 23, 1831, and became the second town within the confines of
5 Perry County to become a borough; and
6 WHEREAS, No record has been found whereby the citizens of
7 Landisburg ever celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their
8 town; however, on July 4, 1843, the town celebrated the American
9 Independence with speeches and a gala parade which formed at the
10 square and proceeded to the courthouse where additional
    11 activities were held; and
12 WHEREAS, On December 3, 1833, the Landisburg cemetery was
13 deeded to the borough with the understanding that anyone,
14 regardless of race, color or religion, could be buried within
15 its confines, a remarkable rule considering the feelings of the
16 people at that time; and
17 WHEREAS, The 168 citizens of Landisburg are to be
18 congratulated for the achievements they have made; therefore be
    19 it
20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
21 occasion of the bicentennial celebration of Landisburg and that
22 all members of the House of Representatives join in extending
23 sincere and enthusiastic congratulations to the citizens of
24 Landisburg upon this historic occasion.
