HOUSE RESOLUTION

           PHILLIPS, BAKER, HERMAN, HENNESSEY, GERLACH, ROBERTS, BOYES,
           HASAY, BUNT AND GEIST, APRIL 19, 1993

        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, APRIL 19, 1993

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  To establish a select committee to investigate the need for more
     2     State park officers.

     3     WHEREAS, There are 114 State parks in this Commonwealth,
     4  consisting of 322,532 acres of land and lakes, at least 1,200
     5  trails, over 7,000 campsites, 272 family cabins, waterfront
     6  beaches, facilities for over 9,300 watercraft and various other
     7  features; and
     8     WHEREAS, Park attendance, the number of parks and
     9  recreational facilities have all increased dramatically during
    10  the past 20 years; and
    11     WHEREAS, Because of attrition and hiring freezes, the number
    12  of salaried State park officers has declined during the same
    13  period; and
    14     WHEREAS, Because of understaffing and a lack of adequate
    15  equipment, the existing State park officers may be insufficient
    16  in capability to protect those using the State parks; therefore
    17  be it


     1     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives establish a
     2  select bipartisan committee of eight men and women to
     3  investigate whether the current staffing and equipping of staff
     4  of the State parks is adequate to meet the needs and the current
     5  demands of the public; and be it further
     6     RESOLVED, That the committee selected report its findings and
     7  recommendations to the full House no later than April 30, 1993.
