                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing "National Women's History Month" and "International
     2     Women's Day."

     3     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania women of every race, class and ethnic
     4  background have made historic contributions to the growth and
     5  strength of our Nation and this Commonwealth in countless
     6  recorded and unrecorded ways; and
     7     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania women have played critical economic,
     8  cultural and social roles in every aspect of the life of the
     9  Nation and this Commonwealth; and
    10     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania women were particularly important in
    11  the establishment of early charitable, philanthropic and
    12  cultural institutions in our Nation and this Commonwealth; and

     1     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania women of every race, class and ethnic
     2  background served as early leaders in the forefront of every
     3  major progressive social change movement; and
     4     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania women have been leaders, not only in
     5  securing their own rights of suffrage and equal opportunity but
     6  also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement,
     7  the industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement and
     8  other movements, especially the peace movement, which create a
     9  more fair and just society for all; and
    10     WHEREAS, Despite these contributions, the role of women in
    11  history has been consistently overlooked and undervalued in the
    12  literature, teaching and study of American history; and
    13     WHEREAS, In 1989 the United States Congress declared the
    14  month of March as "National Women's History Month"; and
    15     WHEREAS, Since the turn of the century, March 8th has been
    16  observed as "International Women's Day"; therefore be it
    17     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
    18  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania acknowledge the month of March as
    19  "National Women's History Month" and the 8th of March as
    20  "International Women's Day," and urge all citizens to join in a
    21  celebration of the heritage of women and to observe this month
    22  and day with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities.
