                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An
     2     act relating to the public school system, including certain
     3     provisions applicable as well to private and parochial
     4     schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the
     5     laws relating thereto," providing for schools to be kept open
     6     on Saturday to make up instructional days lost as a result of
     7     inclement weather.

     8     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     9  hereby enacts as follows:
    10     Section 1.  Section 1502 of the act of March 10, 1949
    11  (P.L.30, No.14), known as the Public School Code of 1949,
    12  amended January 24, 1966 (1965 P.L.1508, No.529), is amended to
    13  read:
    14     Section 1502.  Days Schools not to be Kept Open.--(a)  No
    15  school shall be kept open on any Saturday for the purpose of
    16  ordinary instruction, except when Monday is fixed by the board
    17  of school directors as the weekly holiday, or on Sunday,
    18  Memorial Day, Fourth of July, or Christmas nor shall any school

     1  be kept open in any district during the time of holding the
     2  teachers' institute for such district. Whenever Memorial day
     3  shall be on a Sunday, the following Monday shall be a holiday.
     4     (b)  For the 1993-1994 school year, the board of school
     5  directors shall have the option of rescheduling instructional
     6  days on Saturday to make up instructional days lost from the
     7  adopted calendar because school was closed as a result of
     8  inclement weather. Notwithstanding the provisions of subsection
     9  (a), if the board of school directors reschedules an
    10  instructional day on Saturday the schools may be open on Monday.
    11     Section 2.  This act shall take effect immediately.
