A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the week of November 15, 1992, as "Geography 2 Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Geography is a discipline that enables us to 4 understand our human and physical world in all of its aspects; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, An understanding of geographic principles is 7 important if we are to be an enlightened society of productive 8 citizens and if we are to exercise global leadership; and 9 WHEREAS, Educational programs in the systematic study of 10 geography help make it possible for citizens to possess the 11 requisite skills to effectively explore questions critical to 12 humanity; and 13 WHEREAS, Society benefits from programs of basic and higher 14 education which offer curricula that impart to students an 15 empirical understanding of geographic themes, including 16 location, place, relationships within place, movement and 17 regions; and
1 WHEREAS, Educators, private sector leaders, the National 2 Geographic Society, the National Council for Geographic 3 Education, the Association of American Geographers, the 4 Pennsylvania Geographic Alliance and similar organizations have 5 expressed concern that our citizens should have a greater 6 understanding of geography; and 7 WHEREAS, It is a national educational goal to enhance our 8 society's geographic perspectives about global places and their 9 relationships to each other; therefore be it 10 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 11 importance of geography and designate the week of November 15, 12 1992, as "Geography Awareness Week."
