                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Congratulating the Village of Yeagertown on the occasion of its
     2     150th Anniversary.

     3     WHEREAS, The territory where the Village of Yeagertown exists
     4  was purchased from the Iroquois Indians in July 1754, by the
     5  Penn family and warranted to Everhart Martin in 1755; and
     6     WHEREAS, Christopher Martin inherited his father's estate and
     7  erected a sawmill and gristmill on the east side of the
     8  Kishacoquillas Creek about 1792; and
     9     WHEREAS, The land passed from Christopher Martin to George
    10  Hanawalt, and then to James Mayes on January 6, 1796, who
    11  erected the stone dwelling at the north end of Yeagertown, along
    12  with a stone barn, a distillery and a stone tavern, and operated
    13  the sawmill and gristmill; and
    14     WHEREAS, On May 6, 1806, James Mayes sold the property to
    15  Philip Diehl; and
    16     WHEREAS, In 1810, Philip Diehl sold the property to Robert
    17  Forsythe who operated the mill until his death in 1824,


     1  whereafter the mill was owned by the Forsythe heirs and operated
     2  by a Campbell and an Oliver; and
     3     WHEREAS, In 1842, John Oliver, Jr., sold the mill and 50
     4  acres to John Jacob Yeager, who settled there with his wife,
     5  eight sons and a daughter, and who operated the mill; and
     6     WHEREAS, The Village of Yeagertown was named in honor of John
     7  Jacob Yeager; and
     8     WHEREAS, In 1859, Jeremiah M. Yeager, son of Jacob, bought
     9  the mill, tore down the original structure and erected a new
    10  mill and operated it until his death in 1906; and
    11     WHEREAS, In 1906, the mill passed to the youngest of Jacob
    12  Yeager's sons, Jesse Orrin Yeager, who added lumber and coal to
    13  the Yeager Mill business; and
    14     WHEREAS, Around the turn of the century, a power plant was
    15  constructed at the mill which generated enough electricity for
    16  all of Yeagertown; and
    17     WHEREAS, The mill prospered until its closing in 1917; and
    18     WHEREAS, The former Lake to Sea Highway, now known as Route
    19  322, contributed to the rapid growth of the Village of
    20  Yeagertown; and
    21     WHEREAS, The Village of Yeagertown's land is blessed with
    22  areas conducive to hunting, fishing and planting; and
    23     WHEREAS, The Village of Yeagertown has, throughout its
    24  history, grown and prospered through the skills and labors of
    25  its residents, embracing and exemplifying the energy, dedication
    26  and diversity from which our Nation and this Commonwealth draw
    27  their strength; and
    28     WHEREAS, The Village of Yeagertown continues to grow and
    29  prosper and has become a valuable small business district and an
    30  outstanding family community in this Commonwealth; therefore be

     2     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the Village
     3  of Yeagertown on its 150th Anniversary Sesquicentennial
     4  Celebration.
