        ADOPTED, MAY 13, 1992

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Urging the Department of Education, local school districts and
     2     intermediate units to participate in the first annual
     3     Statewide Pennsylvania Academic Competition on May 29, 1992.

     4     WHEREAS, The education of all Pennsylvania children is a
     5  major concern to the citizens of this Commonwealth and requires
     6  the use of creative and innovative means to focus attention upon
     7  this concern; and
     8     WHEREAS, Academic competition is an innovative and creative
     9  attempt to involve children, parents, educators and community
    10  members in an educational forum for excellence; and
    11     WHEREAS, Athletic excellence has long been recognized by
    12  societal and community rewards provided for that type of
    13  competition; and
    14     WHEREAS, Academic competition helps to hone the abilities and
    15  intellectual skills of students, as well as providing

     1  opportunities for incentives to continue the pursuit of
     2  excellence in education; and
     3     WHEREAS, A coordinated program of academic competition has
     4  not existed in this Commonwealth, except in isolated school
     5  district programs; therefore be it
     6     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare the week
     7  of May 26, 1992, as "Pennsylvania Academic Competition Week";
     8  and be it further
     9     RESOLVED, That the Department of Education, local school
    10  districts and intermediate units are urged to actively
    11  participate in the finals of the first annual Statewide Academic
    12  Competition to be held in the House of Representatives Chambers
    13  on May 29, 1992.
