                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commemorating the Student Literacy Corps of the Indiana
     2     University of Pennsylvania for their time, effort and
     3     dedication in helping functionally illiterate adults receive
     4     a good education.

     5     WHEREAS, 12% of Pennsylvania adults 20 years of age or older
     6  were reading at or below the fourth grade level; and
     7     WHEREAS, 5.7% of the estimated 1.8 million residents of this
     8  Commonwealth 25 years of age or older with less than 12 years of
     9  formal education were served through programs that provided
    10  instructional services or adjunct services and an additional
    11  46,210 adults received literacy materials and other information
    12  and referral services; and
    13     WHEREAS, 6,214 persons have been trained as volunteer tutors;
    14  and
    15     WHEREAS, The Student Literacy Program at Indiana University
    16  of Pennsylvania has developed new curricula and innovative
    17  instructional approaches to increase the literacy of adults in
    18  Indiana County; and
    19     WHEREAS, Since 1990, the Student Literacy Program at Indiana


     1  University of Pennsylvania has increased the productivity and
     2  employment of certain individuals in Indiana County; therefore
     3  be it
     4     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
     5  Student Literacy Corps of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania
     6  and recommend that the Student Literacy Program be used as a
     7  model for all programs throughout this Commonwealth.
