        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, APRIL 1, 1992

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Memorializing the Governor to proclaim the eight days of April
     2     26 through May 3, 1992, as "Days of Remembrance of the
     3     Victims of the Holocaust."

     4     WHEREAS, From 1933 to 1945, 6,000,000 Jews were murdered in
     5  the Nazi Holocaust as part of a systematic program of genocide,
     6  and millions of other people perished as victims of Nazism; and
     7     WHEREAS, The people of this Commonwealth should always
     8  remember the atrocities committed by the Nazis so that such
     9  horrors could never be repeated and should continually
    10  rededicate themselves to the principle of equal justice for all
    11  people; and
    12     WHEREAS, The people of this Commonwealth should remain


     1  eternally vigilant against all tyranny and should recognize that
     2  bigotry provides a breeding ground for tyranny to flourish; and
     3     WHEREAS, The Department of Education in 1990 published "The
     4  Holocaust--A Guide for Pennsylvania Teachers," in cooperation
     5  with the Pennsylvania Jewish Coalition; and
     6     WHEREAS, Publications of this type are useful and important
     7  tools to educate our teachers and their students in eliminating
     8  the prejudice and bigotry which leads to discrimination,
     9  persecution and, ultimately, to genocide; and
    10     WHEREAS, April 30, 1992, has been designated internationally
    11  as a "Day of Remembrance of Victims of the Holocaust," known as
    12  Yom Hashoah; and
    13     WHEREAS, It is appropriate for the people of this
    14  Commonwealth to join in the international commemoration;
    15  therefore be it
    16     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives memorialize the
    17  Governor to proclaim the eight days of April 26 through May 3,
    18  1992, as "Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust,"
    19  in memory of the victims of the Holocaust in the hope that we
    20  will strive always to overcome prejudice and inhumanity through
    21  education, vigilance and resistance; and be it further
    22     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives memorialize the
    23  Governor to support the continued promotion and distribution of
    24  "The Holocaust--A Guide for Pennsylvania Teachers," in schools
    25  of this Commonwealth.
