A RESOLUTION 1 Designating Tuesday, March 31, 1992, as "Library Day" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Library Association, in cooperation 4 with Pennsylvania Citizens for Better Libraries and the 5 Pennsylvania School Librarians Association, is sponsoring an 6 annual legislative day on Tuesday, March 31, 1992, at the 7 Capitol; and 8 WHEREAS, There will be a rally at 12 o'clock noon on March 9 31, 1992, in the Capitol Rotunda to let the administration and 10 the public know about the crisis libraries in this Commonwealth 11 are facing; and 12 WHEREAS, Public library funding has been cut four times since 13 January 1991 and libraries across this Commonwealth are cutting 14 hours, laying off staff and reducing or eliminating purchases of 15 new books, periodicals and other materials; and 16 WHEREAS, The effect of cutting library funding has the 17 indirect impact of affecting the economy as well. Libraries are
1 not able to continue purchasing materials, which hurts the 2 businesses which sell them. In addition, when libraries lay off 3 staff, there are fewer people to pay State income taxes; 4 therefore be it 5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate 6 Tuesday, March 31, 1992, as "Library Day" in Pennsylvania and 7 encourage all Pennsylvanians to show their support for the 8 important and valuable services provided by libraries.
