A RESOLUTION 1 Designating February 16, 1992, as "Elks American Patriotism Day" 2 in celebration of the Elks' 124th Anniversary. 3 WHEREAS, The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is one 4 of the oldest and largest fraternal organizations in the United 5 States, having held its first formal meeting on February 16, 6 1868, in New York City; and 7 WHEREAS, Patriotism is the hallmark of the Elks; and 8 WHEREAS, The Elks became the first organization to observe 9 June 14 as Flag Day, and more than 40 years later, fellow Elk, 10 President Harry S. Truman, signed an order proclaiming Flag Day 11 as an official national holiday; and 12 WHEREAS, The Elks, in the interest of education, have awarded 13 scholarships to more than 500 outstanding high school students 14 and emergency educational grants to needy students; and 15 WHEREAS, A civic-minded organization, the Elks contributed 16 $27 million to support cerebral palsy research, veterans' 17 hospitals, care for children with mental retardation and other
1 services to aid people with disabilities; and 2 WHEREAS, On February 16, 1992, the objective of the Elks is 3 to have the red, white and blue colors of the American flag 4 displayed by everyone; therefore be it 5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate 6 February 16, 1992, as "Elks American Patriotism Day" in 7 celebration of the 124th Anniversary of this venerable 8 organization; and be it further 9 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to 10 Paul Q.
