A RESOLUTION 1 Urging the Pennsylvania Department of Education, local school 2 districts and intermediate units to organize a Statewide 3 academic competition. 4 WHEREAS, The education of all Pennsylvania children is a 5 major concern to the citizens of this Commonwealth and requires 6 the use of creative and innovative means to focus attention upon 7 these concerns; and 8 WHEREAS, Academic competition is just such an innovative and 9 creative attempt to involve children, parents, educators and 10 community members in an educational forum for excellence; and 11 WHEREAS, Athletic excellence has long been recognized by 12 societal and community rewards provided for in this type of 13 Statewide competition; and 14 WHEREAS, Academic competition helps to hone the abilities and 15 intellectual skill of students, as well as providing 16 opportunities for incentives to continue the pursuit of 17 excellence in education; and
1 WHEREAS, A coordinated program of academic competition does 2 not exist in this Commonwealth, except in some isolated school 3 district programs; therefore be it 4 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives direct the 5 Pennsylvania Department of Education, local school districts, 6 local intermediate units and local community leaders in business 7 and commerce to work together in a cooperative effort to 8 establish a Statewide academic competition program in the 9 Commonwealth; and be it further 10 RESOLVED, That the Commissioner for Basic Education shall 11 appoint an individual or individuals to examine the structure of 12 currently existing programs and to design a model that can be 13 effectively disseminated to other school districts in this 14 Commonwealth; and be it further 15 RESOLVED, That the Commissioner for Basic Education 16 coordinate the involvement of local business, industry and 17 commerce to develop a support mechanism for these programs; and 18 be it further 19 RESOLVED, That the Commissioner for Basic Education also 20 encourage local business, industry and commerce in the provision 21 of scholastic rewards to schools for outstanding academic 22 achievement; and be it further 23 RESOLVED, That the Department of Education provide to the 24 General Assembly, once the program is established, a report 25 concerning the establishment of this Statewide academic 26 competition.
