                               A JOINT RESOLUTION

     1  Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the Commonwealth
     2     of Pennsylvania, further providing for compensation and
     3     retirement of judicial officers.

     4     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     5  hereby resolves as follows:
     6     Section 1.  The following amendment to the Constitution of
     7  Pennsylvania is proposed in accordance with Article XI:
     8     That section 16(b) of Article V be amended to read:
     9  § 16.  Compensation and retirement of justices, judges and
    10             justices of the peace.

    12     (b)  Justices, judges and justices of the peace shall be
    13  retired upon attaining the age of 70 years. Former and retired
    14  justices, judges and justices of the peace shall receive such
    15  compensation, retirement benefits or pensions as shall be
    16  provided by law. Such benefits or pensions shall be uniform for
    17  each class of justices, judges and justices of the peace to be
    18  defined by the General Assembly. Nothing in this subsection

     1  shall preclude the General Assembly from prospectively
     2  establishing differing retirement benefits or pensions for the
     3  various classes or modifying retirement benefits or pensions. No
     4  compensation shall be paid to any justice, judge or justice of
     5  the peace who is suspended or removed from office under section
     6  18 of this article or under Article VI.
