        ADOPTED, SEPTEMBER 24, 1990

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the week of September 23, 1990, as "World Summit for
     2     Children Week."

     3     WHEREAS, Forty thousand children die worldwide everyday from
     4  malnutrition and disease; and
     5     WHEREAS, Over 50,000,000 of the deaths during the decade of
     6  the 1990's would be easily preventable with today's technology;
     7  and
     8     WHEREAS, United States' child poverty, infant mortality and
     9  school achievement are among the worst of all industrialized
    10  countries, with 40,000 children dying in this country every
    11  year; and
    12     WHEREAS, Leaders of six countries have called for a World
    13  Summit for Children in New York City on September 29 and 30,
    14  1990, to address the pressing needs of children;
    15     WHEREAS, Our citizens are concerned about the health,


     1  education and welfare of children everywhere; and
     2     WHEREAS, Adults and children at five sites across this
     3  Commonwealth are holding Candlelight Vigils on Sunday, September
     4  23, 1990, to mobilize leaders to participate fully in the World
     5  Summit for Children; and
     6     WHEREAS, On November 20, 1989, the United Nations General
     7  Assembly unanimously approved an international "Convention on
     8  the Rights of the Child," which spells out critical economic,
     9  social, cultural, civil and political rights of children;
    10  therefore be it
    11     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives support the
    12  Convention and designate the week beginning September 23, 1990,
    13  as "World Summit for Children Week" in Pennsylvania; and be it
    14  further
    15     RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to
    16  the President of the United States, the Governor, to the
    17  presiding officers of each house of Congress and to each member
    18  of Congress from Pennsylvania.
