                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Saluting the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) Program.

     2     WHEREAS, DARE, Drug Abuse Resistance Education, is an
     3  innovative program designed to prevent substance abuse through
     4  education, which was developed in California in 1983 through the
     5  cooperative efforts of the Los Angeles Police Department and the
     6  Los Angeles Unified School District; and
     7     WHEREAS, The aim of the program is to equip our youth with
     8  the skills to resist peer pressure to experiment with and use
     9  harmful drugs and alcohol; and
    10     WHEREAS, The DARE lessons focus on four major areas, those
    11  being: (1) providing accurate information about alcohol and
    12  drugs; (2) teaching students decisionmaking skills; (3) showing
    13  them how to resist peer pressure; and (4) giving them ideas for
    14  alternatives to drug use; and
    15     WHEREAS, Research has shown that DARE has improved students'
    16  attitudes about themselves, increased their sense of
    17  responsibility to themselves and to police, and strengthened

     1  their resistance to drugs and alcohol; and
     2     WHEREAS, DARE has also changed parents' attitudes through an
     3  evening program to teach parents about drugs and alcohol, the
     4  symptoms of their use, and ways to increase family
     5  communication; and
     6     WHEREAS, The DARE program is currently offered in 47 states
     7  with over 2,250 trained men and women in law enforcement,
     8  representing 1,200 agencies, offering this education program;
     9  therefore be it
    10     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
    11  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania salute the Drug Abuse Resistance
    12  Education (DARE) Program, and encourage law enforcement agencies
    13  and schools throughout this Commonwealth to cooperate in
    14  utilizing this program to educate our youth and their parents on
    15  the evils of drug and alcohol abuse.
