        ADOPTED, JUNE 7, 1989

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the 100th Anniversary playing of the USTA National
     2     Amateur Clay Court and West Penn Tennis Championships.

     3     WHEREAS, The USTA National Amateur Clay Court and West Penn
     4  Tennis Championships will be held in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania,
     5  July 8 through 16, 1989; and
     6     WHEREAS, This is the 100th Anniversary of these
     7  championships; and
     8     WHEREAS, The goal of this event in 1989 is fundraising for
     9  the Allegheny County Special Olympics; and
    10     WHEREAS, This is the longest consecutive running tennis
    11  tournament in the United States; and
    12     WHEREAS, The site of the tournament, the Tressel Municipal
    13  Tennis Center in Mt. Lebanon, was in 1985 named the Outstanding
    14  Public Tennis Facility in America by the United States Tennis
    15  Association; and
    16     WHEREAS, Many previous participants have gone on to become
    17  "big name" professionals, such as:  Bill Tildon, Roscoe Tanner,


     1  Brian Gottfried, Eddie Dibbs, Brad Gilbert, Harold Solomon,
     2  Peter Fleming, Vitas Geralitis, Sandy Mayer, Jo Anne Russell,
     3  Laura Dupont, Barbara Halquist, Kathy Jordan, Berta McCallum,
     4  Kathy Horvath, Susan Mascarin, Gretchen Rush Magers and Carrie
     5  Cunningham. Seventy five percent of all male participants and
     6  sixty percent of the female participants who have played in this
     7  championship have become major tennis professionals; therefore
     8  be it
     9     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
    10  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania congratulate the Tournament
    11  Executive Committee and the 1989 tournament sponsor, Cellular
    12  One Mobile Phone Company, on the occasion of the 100th
    13  Anniversary playing of the USTA National Amateur Clay Court and
    14  West Penn Tennis Championships.
