A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of June 1989 as "Hire a Vet Month." 2 WHEREAS, Time spent in military service gives veterans an 3 opportunity to gain technical skills, experience and good work 4 habits that are transferable to the civilian job market; and 5 WHEREAS, Veterans continue to have higher unemployment and 6 remain out of work longer than other groups, despite the need 7 for well-trained employees in growth industries and in 8 occupations requiring technological skills; and 9 WHEREAS, The Emergency Veterans' Job Training Act of 1983 10 (Public Law 98-77, 97 Stat. 443) was enacted to help America's 11 business community build more capable, productive work forces by 12 reimbursing employers for hiring and training eligible Korean 13 Conflict and Vietnam-era veterans; and 14 WHEREAS, The Emergency Veterans' Job Training Act of 1983
1 will represent a major and positive step toward helping the 2 Pennsylvania business community fill the jobs being created by 3 new technology and an expanding economy; and 4 WHEREAS, Providing jobless veterans with new opportunities 5 for permanent, private-sector employment is one of the greatest 6 tributes Pennsylvania can pay to individuals who served well and 7 sacrificed much during difficult periods in our Nation's 8 history; therefore be it 9 RESOLVED, That the month of June 1989 be designated as "Hire 10 a Vet Month" in Pennsylvania in recognition of the cooperation 11 among the Federal Department of Labor, the Veterans' 12 Administration and the Pennsylvania business community in 13 developing employment and training opportunities for our 14 veterans; and be it further 15 RESOLVED, That the Governor is urged to issue a proclamation 16 calling upon the people and businesses of Pennsylvania to 17 observe June 1989 with appropriate ceremonies and activities; 18 and be it further 19 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to 20 the presiding officers of each house of Congress and to each 21 member of Congress from Pennsylvania.
