                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the 50th anniversary of Little League Baseball.

     2     WHEREAS, On June 6, 1939, the first Little League Baseball
     3  game was played in Williamsport, Pennsylvania; and
     4     WHEREAS, The Little League program in 1939 consisted of three
     5  teams, all in Williamsport, and by 1946 there were 12 such
     6  programs, all in Pennsylvania; and
     7     WHEREAS, By 1955, Little League was found in every state, and
     8  is currently played in 28 countries, with 2.5 million youngsters
     9  participating, culminating in a World Series each year; and
    10     WHEREAS, From its inception, Little League Baseball has been
    11  a vehicle for a program to promote the attributes of fair play,


     1  good sportsmanship and a desire to excel through friendly
     2  competition; and
     3     WHEREAS, Thousands of adult volunteers give of their time,
     4  energy and ability to make this program possible; and
     5     WHEREAS, Little League has been honored as the only youth
     6  sports organization to be chartered by the United States
     7  Congress; and
     8     WHEREAS, In 1959, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed
     9  the first "Little League Baseball Week" the second week in June,
    10  now celebrated every year by members throughout the country, and
    11  this year being celebrated from June 12 through June 16; and
    12     WHEREAS, Over 450 Major League Baseball players and countless
    13  leaders in politics, business and industry are Little League
    14  graduates; and
    15     WHEREAS, The goals of Little League Baseball have always been
    16  and will remain to instill in children the values of teamwork,
    17  discipline and responsibility through a simple, fun game of
    18  baseball. Since 1939, and far into the next century, the value
    19  of Little League Baseball will be measured more by what a child
    20  learns than what the child wins; therefore be it
    21     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
    22  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania recognize the 50th anniversary of
    23  Little League Baseball and the benefits that have been reaped,
    24  by our youth throughout those years by virtue of this
    25  outstanding program.
