                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating May 27, 1989, as "Rachel Carson Day."

     2     WHEREAS, Rachel Carson was born in Springdale, Pennsylvania,
     3  on May 27, 1907; and
     4     WHEREAS, Rachel Carson was one of the first women employed by
     5  the United States Fish and Wildlife Service; and
     6     WHEREAS, She authored five books, including "Silent Spring,"
     7  and published 24 articles, all of which demonstrated not only
     8  her scientific legitimacy, but also her poetic appreciation of
     9  the natural world; and
    10     WHEREAS, Her provocative book, "Silent Spring," triggered the
    11  modern environmental movement; and
    12     WHEREAS, "Silent Spring" focused public attention and concern
    13  on the delicate balance of nature and alerted the world to the
    14  insidious danger of indiscriminate and irresponsible use of


     1  pesticides; and
     2     WHEREAS, Her indefatigable efforts on behalf of nature
     3  resulted in a ban on the use of DDT in the United States; and
     4     WHEREAS, In 1980, President Carter posthumously awarded
     5  Rachel Carson the Presidential Medal of Freedom, our nation's
     6  highest civilian medal; and
     7     WHEREAS, In 1981, the United States Postal Service issued a
     8  commemorative stamp in honor of Rachel Carson; and
     9     WHEREAS, Rachel Carson is generally recognized as the "mother
    10  of the age of ecology"; therefore be it
    11     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
    12  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania designate May 27, 1989, as "Rachel
    13  Carson Day" to honor one of this Commonwealth's most famous
    14  daughters.
