A RESOLUTION 1 Commending the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association for 2 supporting the Special Olympics. 3 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association is 4 sponsoring the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, a 5 nationwide project first developed in 1983 by the Police 6 Department of Wichita, Kansas. In 1985, the Pennsylvania Chiefs 7 of Police Association became a sponsor, and Pennsylvania was one 8 of seven states to complete a Torch Run. Nationally, thousands 9 of dollars have been generated in runs involving more than 2,000 10 law enforcement runners along routes covering over 50,000 miles; 11 and 12 WHEREAS, During June 1987, Pennsylvania is among 45 states 13 conducting Law Enforcement Torch Runs for Special Olympics. The 14 1987 Pennsylvania Torch Run began in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, 15 Hazleton and Scranton and will finish in Allentown at the 16 opening ceremonies of Pennsylvania's Special Olympics Summer 17 Games on June 19, 1987; and
1 WHEREAS, The Special Olympics, through State and local 2 chapters, provide sports training and competition for over 3 100,000 mentally retarded children and adults. Pennsylvania has 4 one of the largest chapters serving 30,000 mentally retarded 5 athletes in a year-round program; therefore be it 6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 7 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania extend special commendation to the 8 Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association for supporting the 9 Special Olympics, and extend special recognition and best wishes 10 to all of the participants in the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement 11 Torch Run for Special Olympics; and be it further 12 RESOLVED, That a copy of this citation be transmitted to the 13 Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association.
