        INTRODUCED BY DeWEESE, CAPPABIANCA, TIGUE, MRKONIC, BLAUM,
           CAWLEY, WAMBACH, BELARDI, BROUJOS, KUKOVICH, BALDWIN, McCALL,
           MARKOSEK, MAYERNIK, KOSINSKI, GRUITZA, FREEMAN, McHALE,
           AFFLERBACH, PRESSMANN AND STEIGHNER, SEPTEMBER 30, 1986

        AMENDED, IN SENATE, NOVEMBER 24, 1986

                            A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

     1  Commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Paralyzed Veterans of
     2     America.

     3     WHEREAS, After World War II, thousands of military personnel
     4  returned from action with spinal cord injuries; and
     5     WHEREAS, Due to the development of antibiotics and new
     6  medical techniques, the life span of spinal cord injured
     7  veterans was significantly prolonged, and they were able to
     8  leave the confines of the hospital and return home; and
     9     WHEREAS, Upon returning to their communities and workplaces,
    10  spinal cord injured veterans found society unwilling, unable or
    11  ill-prepared to accommodate their needs; and
    12     WHEREAS, In 1946, spinal cord injured veterans joined
    13  together and officially formed the Paralyzed Veterans of America
    14  in order to foster positive attitudes about themselves and to
    15  create opportunities for thousands of veterans; and
    16     WHEREAS, For the past 40 years, the Paralyzed Veterans of


     1  America has led the way in ensuring quality health care and
     2  rehabilitation opportunities for the spinal cord injured veteran
     3  and has relentlessly pressed for full civil rights for millions
     4  of disabled Americans inhibited by architectural,
     5  transportational and attitudinal barriers; and
     6     WHEREAS, The Paralyzed Veterans of America, through its
     7  national efforts and through the efforts of its chapter
     8  organizations located in this Commonwealth--Eastern Paralyzed
     9  Veterans Association and Tri-State Paralyzed Veterans of
    10  America--has greatly benefited the citizens of this
    11  Commonwealth; therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED (the Senate concurring), That the House of            <--
    13  Representatives GENERAL ASSEMBLY congratulate and commemorate     <--
    14  the 40th Anniversary of the Paralyzed Veterans of America; and
    15  be it further
    16     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
    17  officials of the Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association and Tri-
    18  State Paralyzed Veterans of America.
