A RESOLUTION 1 Designating February 16, 1986, as "Elks American Patriotism Day" 2 in celebration of the Elks' 118th anniversary. 3 WHEREAS, The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is one 4 of the oldest and largest fraternal organizations in the United 5 States, having held its first formal meeting on February 16, 6 1868, in New York City; and 7 WHEREAS, The Elks, with patriotism being the hallmark of this 8 organization, became the first organization to observe June 14 9 as Flag Day. More than 40 years later, fellow Elk, President 10 Harry S. Truman, signed an order proclaiming Flag Day as an 11 official national holiday; and 12 WHEREAS, The Elks, in the interest of education, have awarded 13 scholarships to 500 outstanding high school students and 14 emergency educational grants to needy students; and 15 WHEREAS, The Elks, being a civic-minded organization, have 16 contributed $26,000,000 in 1983 to support cerebral palsy 17 research, veterans' hospitals, retarded child care and other
1 services to aid the handicapped; and 2 WHEREAS, On February 16, 1986, the objective of the Elks is 3 to have the colors of the American flag, red, white and blue, 4 displayed by everyone; therefore be it 5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 6 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania designate February 16, 1986, as 7 "Elks American Patriotism Day" in celebration of the 118th 8 anniversary of this venerable organization; and be it further 9 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to 10 Robert H. Stanley, Past Exalted Ruler of the Pittsburgh South 11 Hills Lodge No. 2213, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, 12 Pennsylvania Elks All American Lodge 1984-1985. A21L82DGS/19860H0233R2835 - 2 -
