Examination of applicant for driver's license. 9 (a) General rule.--Every applicant for a driver's license 10 shall be examined for the type or class of vehicles that the 11 applicant desires to drive. The examination shall include a 12 physical examination, a screening test of the applicant's 13 eyesight and a test of the applicant's ability to read and 14 understand official traffic-control devices, knowledge of safe 15 driving practices and the traffic laws of this Commonwealth, and 16 shall include an actual demonstration of ability to exercise 17 ordinary and reasonable control in the operation of a motor 18 vehicle of the type or class of vehicles for which the applicant

If 7 the department finds it necessary to further determine an 8 applicant's fitness to operate a motor vehicle safely upon the 9 highways the department may require one or more of the following 10 types of examinations: 11 (1) A vision examination by an optometrist or 12 ophthalmologist. 13 (2) A physical examination. 14 (3) A mental examination. 15 (b) Issuance of license to licensed nonresident.--A driver's 16 license may be issued to a person who has not had a learner's 17 permit but who at the time of application is of sufficient age 18 and has a valid driver's license issued by another state under a 19 law requiring the examination and licensing of drivers, 20 providing that the applicant demonstrates knowledge and 21 understanding of rules of the road and official traffic-control 22 devices and is visually, physically and mentally fit. This act shall take effect in 60 days. I19L75VDL/19850H1769B2268 - 2 -
