                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of June 1, 1945 (P.L.1242, No.428), entitled
     2     "An act relating to roads, streets, highways and bridges;
     3     amending, revising, consolidating and changing the laws
     4     administered by the Secretary of Highways and by the
     5     Department of Highways relating thereto," requiring that
     6     contracts for projects on heavily traveled highways provide
     7     for increased working hours.

     8     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     9  hereby enacts as follows:
    10     Section 1.  The act of June 1, 1945 (P.L.1242, No.428), known
    11  as the State Highway Law, is amended by adding a section to
    12  read:
    13     Section 404.2.  Projects on Heavily Traveled Highways.--In
    14  order to shorten the construction period and thereby relieve
    15  traffic congestion, the department shall require, as a condition
    16  of contracts for the construction, reconstruction or improvement
    17  of heavily traveled interstate highways and State highways, two
    18  full eight-hour shifts of work per working day.  In determining
    19  the projects governed by this section, the department shall
    20  consider the volume and type of traffic, the nature of the area,

     1  the effect of disruption of traffic on the economy of the area
     2  and any other factors which it deems pertinent or which may be
     3  called to its attention by citizens of the affected area.
     4     Section 2.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
