        AS AMENDED ON THIRD CONSIDERATION, HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
           MARCH 25, 1985

                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending Title 75 (Vehicles) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated
     2     Statutes, further defining the term "articulated bus."

     3     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     4  hereby enacts as follows:
     5     Section 1.  The definition of "articulated bus" in section
     6  102 of Title 75 of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes is
     7  amended to read:
     8  § 102.  Definitions.
     9     Subject to additional definitions contained in subsequent
    10  provisions of this title which are applicable to specific
    11  provisions of this title, the following words and phrases when
    12  used in this title shall have, unless the context clearly
    13  indicates otherwise, the meanings given to them in this section:
    14     * * *
    15     "Articulated bus."  A bus [designed to transport passengers
    16  and on which passengers are authorized to be transported,]
    17  consisting of two or more units or sections permanently

     1  assembled in tandem by flexible connections which permit
     2  passenger movement throughout the length of the bus. The term
     3  also includes a bus consisting of a truck tractor and a
     4  semitrailer designed for passenger convenience, AS LONG AS ANY    <--
     5  SUCH VEHICLE MEETS ALL APPROPRIATE FEDERAL AND STATE SAFETY
     6  STANDARDS. THE DEPARTMENT SHALL ESTABLISH, BY REGULATION, SAFETY
     7  STANDARDS FOR THE DESIGN AND OPERATION OF SUCH VEHICLE.
     8     Section 2.  Section 1504(d)(2) of Title 75 is amended to
     9  read:
    10  § 1504.  Classes of licenses.

    12     (d)  Number and description of classes.--Licenses issued by
    13  the department shall be classified in the following manner:
    14         * * *
    15         (2)  Class 2.--A Class 2 license shall be issued to those
    16     persons over 18 years of age who have demonstrated their
    17     qualifications to operate a single vehicle of over 30,000
    18     pounds registered gross weight or any bus except an
    19     articulated bus consisting of a truck tractor and a
    20     semitrailer design, the driver of which shall have a Class 3
    21     license, or any such vehicle towing a trailer not in excess
    22     of 10,000 pounds gross weight. The holder of a Class 2
    23     license shall be deemed qualified to operate those vehicles
    24     for which a Class 1 license is issued, but not school buses
    25     or motorcycles unless the license is endorsed as provided in
    26     this section.

    28     Section 3.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
