A RESOLUTION 1 Relating to the granting of credit to South Africa by the 2 Export-Import Bank. 3 WHEREAS, On October 19, 1977, South Africa cracked down 4 against all organized, legal opposition to apartheid. This is 5 only the latest brutality of a regime which has detained 6 thousands of its opponents and denied the most basic human, 7 economic and political rights to the majority black population; 8 and 9 WHEREAS, We believe that further loans to South Africa by 10 commercial and government-controlled banks in the United States 11 are morally wrong and undermine the interests and values of the 12 American people; and 13 WHEREAS, We believe that the continued granting of credit by 14 the Export-Import Bank, with the full backing of the United 15 States to help finance purchases by government and private 16 purchasers in South Africa, strengthens the apartheid system; 17 therefore be it
1 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 2 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania urge the President and memorialize 3 the Congress of the United States to forbid the use of all 4 Export-Import Bank facilities to support purchases of American 5 goods by the South African government, its agencies and any 6 private interests in the Republic of South Africa; and be it 7 further 8 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to 9 the President of the United States, the presiding officers of 10 each house of Congress and to each member of Congress from 11 Pennsylvania.
