A RESOLUTION 1 Directing the House Committee on Transportation to conduct an 2 immediate investigation on the impact of Conrail operations 3 in Pennsylvania. 4 WHEREAS, The Consolidated Rail Corporation was created as a 5 quasi-government corporation by the Federal Government with the 6 avowed purpose of providing continuous rail service in the 7 northeastern part of the United States after the bankruptcy of 8 the five Class I railroads serving this region; and 9 WHEREAS, The operations of the Conrail railroad giant, of 10 necessity, impact greatly on the economic well-being of the 11 Commonwealth and its citizens; and 12 WHEREAS, Recently the General Assembly enacted legislation to 13 provide tax credits to and other assistance for the operations 14 of Conrail; and 15 WHEREAS, The moves of the Conrail management to present a 16 profitable picture have resulted in high increases in
1 unemployment of Pennsylvania workers and the massive abandonment 2 of facilities and services within Pennsylvania; therefore be it 3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives direct the House 4 Committee on Transportation to conduct an immediate and thorough 5 investigation of the operations of Conrail in Pennsylvania in 6 relation to the loss of jobs and the economic losses to the 7 Commonwealth as a result of the tax credit policy and other 8 expenses made on behalf of Conrail; and be it further 9 RESOLVED, That the committee report its findings to the House 10 of Representatives as soon as possible.
