REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, MAY 11, 1981
In the House of Representatives, May 11, 1981 1 Bobby Sands, the 27-year old Northern Ireland freedom fighter 2 died on May 5, 1981 in the 66th day of his hunger strike at the 3 Maze Prison near Belfast. 4 The British refused to grant Sands, who was a member of the 5 British Parliament, his request to be given political prisoner 6 status even though they knew that he was near death. 7 Many Americans feel that the denial of Sands' request was a 8 denial of his human rights and that it is a disgrace to allow a 9 man to die for his beliefs. 10 Since there are three other Irish, who are also fasting, it 11 is time that the British are made aware of the feelings of the 12 members of the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of 13 Pennsylvania; therefore be it 14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 15 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania urges the British Government to at
1 least negotiate with the Irish Nationalists with an aim of 2 settling their differences without additional deaths; and be it 3 further 4 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the 5 British Ambassador in Washington and Prime Minister Margaret 6 Thatcher.
