HOUSE RESOLUTION

        INTRODUCED BY WILT, DOMBROWSKI, CAPPABIANCA, BOWSER, BOYES AND
           MERRY, APRIL 7, 1981

        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, APRIL 7, 1981

                          In the House of Representatives, April 7, 1981

     1     WHEREAS, The Great Lakes Basin, connected to the sea by the
     2  St. Lawrence, is an environmental system of tremendous economic
     3  and natural value; and
     4     WHEREAS, The navigational accessibility to the region has
     5  encouraged the emergence of one of America's important
     6  manufacturing and industrial regions; and
     7     WHEREAS, Ninety-five per cent of the fresh water of the
     8  United States is contained within the Great Lakes; and
     9     WHEREAS, The Great Lakes, covering ninety-five thousand
    10  square miles, is a valuable regional fishery producing ten
    11  million pounds of fish annually; and
    12     WHEREAS, The Great Lakes regional tourist economy is
    13  dependent upon environmental integrity of the Great Lakes
    14  region; and
    15     WHEREAS, The Great Lakes region is shared by eight states and
    16  the Province of Ontario; and
    17     WHEREAS, The region's continued productive future is largely

     1  dependent on close cooperation of provincial and state
     2  governments; and
     3     WHEREAS, The successful Interstate Committee on Lake Erie is
     4  being extended to all Great Lakes states to encourage broader
     5  legislative input into the various environmental decisions
     6  affecting this important region; therefore be it
     7     RESOLVED, That the Speaker of the House of Representatives
     8  appoint five members of the House, three of whom shall be from
     9  the majority party and two from the minority party, and that the
    10  President pro tempore of the Senate appoint five members of the
    11  Senate, three of whom shall be from the majority party and two
    12  from the minority party to the Interstate Committee on the Great
    13  Lakes. Such committee shall investigate various environmental,
    14  navigational and other concerns of the Great Lakes region and
    15  shall make recommendations for appropriate legislative action
    16  necessary to correct such problems; and be it further
    17     RESOLVED, That the committee may hold public hearings, take
    18  testimony and make its study at such places as it deems
    19  necessary within the Great Lakes region; and be it further
    20     RESOLVED, That the committee shall report its findings
    21  together with its recommendations for appropriate legislative
    22  action or otherwise to the General Assembly from time to time.
