           REPRESENTATIVES, AS AMENDED, SEPTEMBER 15, 1982

                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An
     2     act relating to the public school system, including certain
     3     provisions applicable as well to private and parochial
     4     schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the
     5     laws relating thereto," further providing for number and
     6     terms of elected school board directors.

     7     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     8  hereby enacts as follows:
     9     Section 1.  Subsection (a) of section 303, act of March 10,
    10  1949 (P.L.30, No.14), known as the "Public School Code of 1949,"
    11  amended July 1, 1978 (P.L.575, No.105), is amended to read:
    12     Section 303.  Number and Election in Districts of the Second,
    13  Third and Fourth Classes; Terms of Office.--(a)  In each school
    14  district of the second class, and on and after July 1, 1966, or
    15  if there is advance establishment July 1, 1964, or July 1, 1965,
    16  as the case may be, in each school district of the second, third
    17  and fourth class, there shall be a board of nine (9) school
    18  directors, who, except as otherwise provided in this act, shall
    19  be elected at large for terms of six (6) years. The terms of

     1  three of the members shall expire on the first Monday of
     2  December of each odd numbered year, as now provided by law. At
     3  each municipal election, three school directors, except as
     4  otherwise provided in this act, shall be elected at large for
     5  terms of six (6) years. Their terms of office shall begin on the
     6  first Monday of December following their election. [Beginning     <--
     7  with the terms to be filled at the municipal election held in
     8  1979 and each odd numbered year thereafter, the terms of school
     9  directors so elected shall be four (4) years.] The terms to be    <--
    10  filled at the municipal election held in 1983 shall be as
    11  follows:
    12     (1)  three (3) school directors shall be elected for three
    13  (3) year terms, and
    14     (2)  three (3) school directors shall be elected for four (4)
    15  year terms.
    16  Thereafter, the terms of school directors shall be four (4)
    17  years. , EXCEPT THAT AT THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION IN 1983, FIVE (5)  <--
    18  SCHOOL DIRECTORS SHALL BE ELECTED FOR TERMS OF FOUR (4) YEARS,
    19  AND ONE (1) FOR A TERM OF TWO (2) YEARS. AT THE MUNICIPAL
    20  ELECTION IN 1985 AND EVERY FOUR (4) YEARS THEREAFTER, FOUR (4)
    21  DIRECTORS SHALL BE ELECTED FOR TERMS OF FOUR (4) YEARS. AT THE
    22  MUNICIPAL ELECTION IN 1987 AND EVERY FOUR (4) YEARS THEREAFTER,
    23  FIVE (5) DIRECTORS SHALL BE ELECTED FOR TERMS OF FOUR (4) YEARS.
    24  THE BOARD SHALL SELECT BY LOT, PRIOR TO THE TIME FOR FILING OF
    25  NOMINATION PETITIONS, THE VACANCY THAT IS TO BE FILLED FOR A TWO
    26  (2) YEAR TERM IN 1983.
