In the House of Representatives, June 11, 1980 1 The United States has fought many wars; and 2 Thousands of Americans who served in those wars were captured 3 by the enemy, or are missing in action; and 4 Many American prisoners of war were subjected to brutal and 5 inhuman treatment by their captors in violation of international 6 codes and customs for the treatment of prisoners of war, many of 7 whom died from such treatment; and 8 It is uncertain whether the Americans missing in action are 9 alive or dead, and such uncertainty has caused their families to 10 suffer great hardship; and 11 The sacrifices of our prisoners of war, missing in action, 12 and their families are deserving of National recognition; 13 therefore be it 14 RESOLVED, That July 18, 1980 be designated "POW-MIA 15 Recognition Day" and that the Governor be requested to issue a 16 proclamation calling upon the citizens of this Commonwealth to 17 observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
