HOUSE RESOLUTION

No. 57 Session of 1979

        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, APRIL 25, 1979

                         In the House of Representatives, April 25, 1979

     1     WHEREAS, Commonwealth highways maintained by the Pennsylvania
     2  Department of Transportation are in a poor state of repair; and
     3     WHEREAS, The efficiency of the present system of State
     4  highway maintenance has been questioned; and
     5     WHEREAS, It is possible that the contracting of highway
     6  maintenance to private enterprise may be more efficient and cost
     7  effective than the present system; therefore be it
     8     RESOLVED, That the Speaker of the House of Representatives
     9  appoint a seven member bipartisan committee, four from the
    10  majority party and three from the minority party, to investigate
    11  the feasibility of contracting for the maintenance of State
    12  highways; and be it further
    13     RESOLVED, That the committee may hold hearings, take
    14  testimony, and make its investigations at such places as it
    15  deems necessary. Each member of the committee shall have power
    16  to administer oaths and affirmations to witnesses appearing
    17  before the committee; and be it further
    18     RESOLVED, That the committee shall report its findings and

     1  recommendations to the General Assembly as soon as possible.
