                                     AN ACT

     1  Requiring the Department of Transportation to make a feasibility
     2     study of certain Amtrak services; make a report to the
     3     General Assembly and making an appropriation.

     4     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     5  hereby enacts as follows:
     6     Section 1.  The Department of Transportation shall conduct a
     7  study of the feasibility of the establishment and operation by
     8  Amtrak of railroad passenger service between Harrisburg and
     9  Williamsport and Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, including but not
    10  limited to, the saving of energy by the elimination of duplicate
    11  transportation, the lessening of America's reliance on imported
    12  oil, the monetary benefit to the communities and personnel
    13  involved, the continued utilization of already existing track
    14  and facilities and the lowering of the rate of death and injury
    15  which occurs in the use of highways instead of the railroad in
    16  the area involved.
    17     Section 2.  The Department of Transportation shall make a
    18  report of its findings and recommendations to the General

     1  Assembly within six months of the effective date of this act.
     2     Section 3.  The sum of $300,000, or as much thereof as is
     3  necessary, is hereby appropriated to the department for the
     4  purposes of this study.
     5     Section 4.  This act shall take effect immediately.
