AN ACT 1 Amending the act of April 27, 1927 (P.L.465, No.299), entitled, 2 as amended, "An act to provide for the safety of persons 3 employed, housed, or assembled in certain buildings and 4 structures not in cities of the first class, second class, 5 and second class A, by requiring certain construction and 6 ways of egress, equipment, and maintenance; providing for the 7 licensing of projectionists, except in cities of the first 8 class and second class; requiring the submission of plans for 9 examination and approval; providing for the promulgation of 10 rules and regulations for the enforcement of this act; 11 providing for the enforcement of this act by the Department 12 of Labor and Industry and, in certain cases, by the chiefs of 13 fire departments in cities of the third class; providing 14 penalties for violations of the provisions of this act; and 15 repealing certain acts," further requiring the installation 16 of smoke detectors in all municipalities except cities of the 17 first class. 18 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania 19 hereby enacts as follows: 20 Section 1. The title, act of April 27, 1927 (P.L.465, 21 No.299), referred to as the Fire and Panic Act, amended January 22 14, 1952 (P.L.1889, No.518), is amended to read: 23 AN ACT
1 To provide for the safety of persons employed, housed, or 2 assembled in certain buildings and structures not in cities 3 of the first class, second class, and second class A, by 4 requiring certain construction and ways of egress, equipment, 5 and maintenance; requiring the installation of smoke 6 detectors in all municipalities except cities of the first 7 class; providing for the licensing of projectionists, except 8 in cities of the first class and second class; requiring the 9 submission of plans for examination and approval; providing 10 for the promulgation of rules and regulations for the 11 enforcement of this act; providing for the enforcement of 12 this act by the Department of Labor and Industry and, in 13 certain cases, by the chiefs of fire departments in cities of 14 the third class; providing penalties for violations of the 15 provisions of this act, and repealing certain acts." 16 Section 2. Section 3 of the act, amended April 11, 1939 17 (P.L.18, No.17), is amended to read: 18 Section 3. Special Requirements.--(a) There shall be 19 installed such emergency lighting systems, sprinkler systems, 20 and fire alarm systems, in such of the buildings enumerated in 21 this act as the Department of Labor and Industry may specify and 22 which in its judgment are necessary to give proper protection 23 from fire and panic to those employed, assembled, lodged or 24 housed therein. No such systems shall be installed unless they 25 are of a type approved by the Department of Labor and Industry. 26 (b) All buildings, except in cities of the first class, 27 covered by the provisions of this act, shall be equipped with 28 smoke detectors of a type approved by the Department of Labor 29 and Industry. 1 Industry shall require by regulations.
2 Section 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
