                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of June 13, 1967 (P.L.31, No.21), entitled "An
     2     act to consolidate, editorially revise, and codify the public
     3     welfare laws of the Commonwealth," providing that persons who
     4     voluntarily quit their employment are not eligible for public
     5     assistance.

     6     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     7  hereby enacts as follows:
     8     Section 1.  Section 408, act of June 13, 1967 (P.L.31,
     9  No.21), known as the "Public Welfare Code," is amended to read:
    10     Section 408.  Meeting Special Needs; Encouraging Self-Support
    11  and Employment.--(a)  The department shall have the duty to take
    12  measures not inconsistent with the purposes of this article; and
    13  when other funds or facilities for such purposes are inadequate
    14  or unavailable to provide for special needs of individuals
    15  eligible for assistance; to relieve suffering and distress
    16  arising from handicaps and infirmities; to promote their
    17  rehabilitation; to help them if possible to become self-
    18  dependent; and, to cooperate to the fullest extent with other
    19  public agencies empowered by law to provide vocational training,


     1  rehabilitative or similar services.
     2     (b)  The department shall encourage employable recipients of
     3  assistance to accept full or part-time employment by providing
     4  that such recipients will again be granted assistance upon
     5  involuntary termination of such employment if they are in need
     6  thereof.
     7     (c)  A person who has voluntarily terminated his or her
     8  employment shall not be eligible for public assistance during
     9  the period of voluntary unemployment.
    10     Section 2.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
