                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of May 22, 1951 (P.L.317, No.69), entitled, as
     2     amended, "An act relating to the practice of professional
     3     nursing; providing for the licensing of nurses and for the
     4     revocation and suspension of such licenses, subject to
     5     appeal, and for their reinstatement; providing for the
     6     renewal of such licenses; regulating nursing in general;
     7     prescribing penalties and repealing certain laws," providing
     8     for qualifications for certain former military personnel.

     9     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    10  hereby enacts as follows:
    11     Section 1.  The act of May 22, 1951 (P.L.317, No.69), known
    12  as "The Professional Nursing Law," is amended by adding a
    13  section to read:
    14     Section 5.1.  (a) Any person who has served on active duty in
    15  the medical corps of any of the armed forces of the United
    16  States and who has successfully completed the course of
    17  instruction required to qualify him for rating as a medical
    18  service technician--independent duty, or other equivalent rating
    19  in his particular branch of the armed forces, and whose service
    20  in the armed forces has been under honorable conditions, may


     1  submit the record of such training to the board for evaluation.
     2     (b)  If such person meets the qualifications of section 6,
     3  and if the board determines that his education and experience
     4  would give reasonable assurance of competence to practice as a
     5  registered nurse in this State, he shall be granted a license
     6  upon passing the standard examination for such licensure.
     7     (c)  The board shall, by regulation, establish criteria for
     8  evaluating the education and experience of applicants under this
     9  section.
    10     (d)  The board shall maintain records of the following
    11  categories of applicants under this section:
    12     (1)  Applicants who are rejected for examination, and the
    13  areas of such applicants' preparation which are the causes of
    14  rejection.
    15     (2)  Applicants who are qualified by their military education
    16  and experience alone to take the examination, and the results of
    17  their examinations.
    18     (3)  Applicants who are qualified to take the examination by
    19  their military education and experience plus supplementary
    20  education, and the results of their examinations.
    21     Section 2.  This act shall take effect immediately.
