AN ACT 1 Declaring and adopting Penngift Crownvetch (Coronilla varia L. 2 Penngift) as the State Beautification and Conservation Plant 3 of Pennsylvania. 4 WHEREAS, Penngift Crownvetch has provided Pennsylvania with 5 world-wide recognition as the "Crownvetch Capitol"; and 6 WHEREAS, Penngift Crownvetch was first discovered in 7 Pennsylvania by Dr. Fred V. Grau in June 1935 and was named 8 Penngift; Penn for Pennsylvania and Gift for the farmer on whose 9 farm the legume was discovered; and 10 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has 11 successfully utilized this plant along the roadsides of every 12 Interstate Highway throughout Pennsylvania since 1958 and 13 receives hundreds of congratulatory letters from the motoring 14 public on the roadside beauty created by Crownvetch; and 15 WHEREAS, Penngift Crownvetch has successfully stabilized and 16 prevented erosion on over fifty thousand acres of erodible soils 17 and is recognized by conservationists as a major plant species 18 in the reestablishment of vegetation on subsoils; and 19 WHEREAS, Penngift Crownvetch is well recognized for its
1 agronomic value as a livestock feed and use as a ground cover 2 for erosion control, nitrogen feeding and soil insulation in no- 3 till corn production; and 4 WHEREAS, Recognizing Penngift Crownvetch as the State 5 Beautification and Conservation Plant of Pennsylvania will pay 6 tribute to Pennsylvania's leadership in roadside beautification 7 and conservation for the 1976 Bicentennial celebration; 8 therefore 9 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania 10 hereby enacts as follows: 11 Section 1. Penngift Crownvetch (Coronilla varia L. Penngift) 12 is hereby selected, designated and adopted as the official State 13 Beautification and Conservation Plant of the Commonwealth of 14 Pennsylvania.
