                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing Indiana County on being named as one of the 2008 100
     2     Best Communities for Young People by America's Promise
     3     Alliance.

     4     WHEREAS, America's Promise Alliance, the nation's largest
     5  alliance dedicated to children and youth, in partnership with
     6  Capital One, announced that Indiana County has been named a
     7  winner of the 2008 100 Best Communities for Young People (100
     8  Best) list; and
     9     WHEREAS, The 100 Best list recognizes the 100 outstanding
    10  communities across the United States that are the best places
    11  for young people to live and grow up; and
    12     WHEREAS, More than 300 communities in 50 states applied for
    13  the honor this year; and
    14     WHEREAS, The 100 winning communities span 39 states; and
    15     WHEREAS, All communities that completed entries were required
    16  to submit detailed information to the alliance on existing
    17  community programs and initiatives that help deliver Five
    18  Promises, which consists of caring adults, safe places, a

     1  healthy start, effective education and opportunities to help
     2  others, to their young people; and
     3     WHEREAS, Indiana County was named a 100 Best community
     4  because of its commitment to provide different opportunities for
     5  young people to grow and succeed; and
     6     WHEREAS, The Children's Advisory Commission of Indiana County
     7  submitted the application on behalf of all the children-serving
     8  and youth-serving organizations in the county; and
     9     WHEREAS, The commission is comprised of representatives from
    10  health and human service entities, schools and the community;
    11  and
    12     WHEREAS, An example of a program that provides a safe and
    13  positive place to go after school is the Evergreen Boys and
    14  Girls Clubs in the Evergreen Purchase Line and Homer-Center
    15  School Districts; and
    16     WHEREAS, The focus of Family Fun Fest, an annual event held
    17  on the first Saturday in March, is to provide parents with early
    18  childhood information so that their children may have a healthy
    19  start in life; and
    20     WHEREAS, A new program to promote healthy weight for children
    21  by teaching nutritional choices and encouraging physical
    22  activity, known as Ways to Enhance Children's Activity and
    23  Nutrition (WE CAN), is being offered at various sites in the
    24  county; and
    25     WHEREAS, The Reality Tour program seeks to educate parents
    26  and adolescents on the dangers of drugs; and
    27     WHEREAS, Service clubs, like the Kiwanis Club of Indiana
    28  County and the Indiana Quota Club, provide funding and
    29  activities for children's programs; therefore be it
    30     RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize Indiana County on being
