        INTRODUCED BY COSTA, FERLO, STOUT, LOGAN, ORIE AND WONDERLING,
           OCTOBER 30, 2007

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, OCTOBER 30, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating November 2007 as "Pennsylvania Epilepsy Awareness
     2     Month."

     3     WHEREAS, Epilepsy affects more than one in every 100 people
     4  in America; and
     5     WHEREAS, Epilepsy is not a single entity, but a family of
     6  more than 40 syndromes that affect 2.7 million Americans and
     7  more than 120,000 Pennsylvanians; and
     8     WHEREAS, A growing number of young children, teens and senior
     9  citizens are diagnosed every year, according to the Epilepsy
    10  Foundation Western/Central Pennsylvania and the Epilepsy
    11  Foundation of Eastern Pennsylvania; and
    12     WHEREAS, Epilepsy can affect anyone at any age; and
    13     WHEREAS, The number of cases in the elderly is beginning to
    14  soar as the baby boomer generation approaches retirement age;
    15  and
    16     WHEREAS, The primary organization in our State dedicated to
    17  educating the public about epilepsy and providing support

     1  services to person with epilepsy and seizure disorder is the
     2  Epilepsy Foundation; and
     3     WHEREAS, Nearly 70% of epilepsy cases have unknown causes;
     4  and
     5     WHEREAS, Public education programs are needed to educate all
     6  Pennsylvanians about epilepsy and to dismiss misconceptions
     7  regarding the disorder; and
     8     WHEREAS, The Epilepsy Foundation Western/Central Pennsylvania
     9  and the Epilepsy Foundation of Eastern Pennsylvania are
    10  conducting extensive outreach programs to educate the general
    11  public about epilepsy; and
    12     WHEREAS, The National Epilepsy Foundation, in conjunction
    13  with more than 57 affiliate organizations across the country, is
    14  recognizing November 2007 as National Epilepsy Awareness Month;
    15  therefore be it
    16     RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of November
    17  2007 as "Pennsylvania Epilepsy Awareness Month," in order to
    18  bring further attention to epilepsy and to recognize
    19  Pennsylvanians affected by epilepsy and their caregivers and
    20  associates for their courage and commitment; and be it further
    21     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
    22  the Epilepsy Foundation Western/Central Pennsylvania and the
    23  Epilepsy Foundation of Eastern Pennsylvania.
