           FONTANA, STOUT, MELLOW, McILHINNEY, WAUGH, C. WILLIAMS,
           RAFFERTY, TOMLINSON, ROBBINS, PILEGGI, WASHINGTON, GREENLEAF,

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, APRIL 24, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating April 25, 2007, as "Arts in Education Day" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The arts allow for us as individuals, families and
     4  communities to liberate ourselves in a form of stylistic
     5  expression far beyond the simplicity of speaking; and
     6     WHEREAS, The arts inspire us to explore beyond cultural norms
     7  and barriers that may limit us and to experience creative
     8  thought and true diversity in this world; and
     9     WHEREAS, The arts provide us with another form of
    10  communicating and expressing our innermost thoughts, feelings,
    11  values and desires; and
    12     WHEREAS, Citizens rely on the arts to transcend cultural
    13  barriers, evoke universal emotions and reveal to us the ever-
    14  changing society in which we live; and
    15     WHEREAS, The arts encourage us to develop a deeper
    16  understanding of ourselves and our goals as Pennsylvanians, as


     1  Americans and as citizens in a global environment; and
     2     WHEREAS, The arts enrich many aspects of our lives which
     3  encompass the quality of our relationships, education, work
     4  environment, homes and communities; and
     5     WHEREAS, The arts reach people on many different levels
     6  regardless of age, race, background, physical and mental
     7  ability, gender, occupation or class; and
     8     WHEREAS, Arts education, whether in visual arts, music,
     9  dance, theater or literature strengthens the development of
    10  creativity, discipline and cognitive and social skills that are
    11  crucial in the preparation of all Pennsylvania's students for
    12  future growth; and
    13     WHEREAS, Arts educators provide our youths with the cultural
    14  education and intricate fundamentals to make them well-rounded
    15  individuals; and
    16     WHEREAS, Arts education programs in our schools enable young
    17  men and women to discover, cultivate and share unique talents as
    18  gifts to society; and
    19     WHEREAS, It is our privilege, enterprise and duty to sustain
    20  the gift of the arts, to enjoy it, to share it, to build upon it
    21  and to pass it on to future generations; therefore be it
    22     RESOLVED, That the Senate designate April 25, 2007, as "Arts
    23  in Education Day" in Pennsylvania as a time to recognize the
    24  arts and arts educators and supporters for continued
    25  preservation and further development of the arts in this
    26  Commonwealth and to emphasize the invaluable contribution of the
    27  arts and arts educators to students in Pennsylvania and our
    28  society as a whole.
