A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the 170th anniversary of the 1845 novel Narrative of
the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, Written by
Himself.
WHEREAS, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An
American Slave, Written by Himself is the first of a trilogy of
autobiographical writings, which also includes My Bondage and My
Freedom, published in 1855 and The Life and Times of Frederick
Douglass, published in 1881; and
WHEREAS, The author of all three autobiographies, Frederick
Douglass, escaped from slavery, helped other slaves to their
freedom through the Underground Railroad and became
internationally renown for his eloquence in the cause of
liberty; and
WHEREAS, All three autobiographies describe the system of
chattel slavery and Douglass' rejection of its premise that he,
like other slaves, was not a human being; and
WHEREAS, All three of Douglass' autobiographies, in their
portrayals of brutal violence and brilliant resistance, present
the historic conflict between freedom and slavery through his

indomitable voice of hope and spirit of liberty; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of Pennsylvania recognize the 170th
anniversary of the 1845 novel Narrative of the Life of Frederick
Douglass, An American Slave, Written by Himself.
