                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending Title 42 (Judiciary and Judicial Procedure) of the
     2     Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes, providing for sentencing
     3     for crimes of violence.

     4     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     5  hereby enacts as follows:
     6     Section 1.  Title 42 of the Pennsylvania Consolidated
     7  Statutes is amended by adding a section to read:
     8  § 9719.1.  Sentences for crimes of violence.
     9     (a)  General rule.--Any person convicted of a "crime of
    10  violence" as defined in 18 Pa.C.S. § 6102 (relating to
    11  definitions) shall serve at least 85% of the maximum sentence
    12  imposed.
    13     (b)  Exception.--This section shall not apply to any person
    14  sentenced to the death penalty or to life imprisonment.
    15     Section 2.  The addition of 42 Pa.C.S. § 9719.1 shall apply
    16  to sentences imposed for offenses which take place on or after
    17  the effective date of this act.

     1     Section 3.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
