A RESOLUTION

 

1Recognizing the month of November 2014 as "National Epilepsy
2Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, Epilepsy impacts more than 200,000 Pennsylvanians
4and their families; and

5WHEREAS, As the third most common neurological disorder in
6the United States, following stroke and Alzheimer's disease,
7epilepsy affects 5 million Americans of all ages; and

8WHEREAS, Epilepsy is a neurological condition sometimes
9referred to as a seizure disorder and is characterized by
10recurring seizures; and

11WHEREAS, One in twenty-six people will develop epilepsy in
12his or her lifetime; and

13WHEREAS, Up to 50,000 Americans die each year from seizures
14and related causes, including sudden unexplained death in

1epilepsy; and

2WHEREAS, The Epilepsy Foundation in Pennsylvania leads the
3fight to stop seizures, find a cure and overcome the challenges
4created by epilepsy; and

5WHEREAS, The Epilepsy Foundation in Pennsylvania is dedicated
6to ensuring that all people with seizures and epilepsy are able
7to participate in all of life's experiences; and

8WHEREAS, The Epilepsy Foundation in Pennsylvania has been
9serving the needs of Pennsylvanians who live with seizures, in
10partnership with the Department of Health since 1994; and

11WHEREAS, The prevention and control of epilepsy can be
12achieved through community education and awareness programs;
13therefore be it

14RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
15month of November 2014 as "National Epilepsy Awareness Month" in
16Pennsylvania.
