A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 200th anniversary of the first settlement of
the community now known as Port Allegany.
WHEREAS, The Borough of Port Allegany lies 30 miles west of
the headwaters of the Allegheny River in McKean County; and
WHEREAS, Originally known as Canoe Place because early
settlers built canoes from the abundant white pine trees in the
vicinity, Port Allegany became a community of considerable
importance due to its lumber trade; and
WHEREAS, In 1838, the name of the community was changed to
Port Allegany; and
WHEREAS, Port Allegany was incorporated as a borough in 1882;
and
WHEREAS, The lumber and glass industries still remain as the
cornerstone of community and economic development in Port
Allegany; and
WHEREAS, During the week of June 12 through 18, 2016, Port

Allegany is celebrating its bicentennial with historical
programs, music, food, craft vendors, a parade and a fair; and
WHEREAS, Port Allegany celebrates its heritage, enterprising
spirit and contributions to this Commonwealth throughout its
bicentennial festivities; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
200th anniversary of the first settlement of the community now
known as Port Allegany; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives heartily
congratulate the community as it celebrates its bicentennial;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
the Borough of Port Allegany, 45 West Maple Street, Port
Allegany, PA 16743.
