INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, SEPTEMBER 26, 2012  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

  

1

Condemning the horrific attack which occurred at the Sikh temple

2

in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, on August 5, 2012; offering

3

heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and loved ones

4

of those who were killed; and expressing hope for a swift

5

recovery of those who were wounded.

6

WHEREAS, On August 5, 2012, an armed gunman opened fire at a

7

Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, during a time of worship;

8

and

9

WHEREAS, This horrific attack killed six people and

10

critically wounded at least three others; and

11

WHEREAS, The temple president, Satwant Singh Kaleka, 65,

12

valiantly gave his life defending worshipers from the gunman;

13

and

14

WHEREAS, Five others also died in the attack including

15

brothers Ranjit Singh, 49, and Sita Singh, 41, priests who lived

16

in the temple, Suveg Singh Khattra, 84, a former farmer and a

constant presence at the temple, Priest Prakash Singh, 39, and

2

Paramjit Kaur, 41, who worked 66 hours a week to provide for her

3

family; and

4

WHEREAS, Oak Creek Police Lieutenant Brian Murphy was the

5

first officer to respond to the incident and was critically

6

injured after being shot by the gunman nine times; and

7

WHEREAS, On August 6, 2012, and August 7, 2012, vigils were

8

held in remembrance of the victims, and nearly 3,000 people paid

9

their respects to those who lost their lives; and

10

WHEREAS, Several thousand people from around the world joined

11

together in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, on Friday, August 10, 2012, as

12

Sikhs gathered to mourn during a two-hour visitation and a wake

13

thereafter; and

14

WHEREAS, President Obama offered his condolences and ordered

15

United States flags to be flown at half-staff through Friday,

16

August 10, 2012, as a mark of respect for the victims of this

17

senseless act of violence; therefore be it

18

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives condemn, in the

19

strongest possible terms, the horrific attack which occurred at

20

the Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, on August 5, 2012; and

21

be it further

22

RESOLVED, That the House of Representative offer its

23

heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of

24

those who were killed in the attack; and be it further

25

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express its hope

26

for swift recovery of those wounded in the attack; and be it

27

further

28

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives stand firm in its

29

belief in democracy, in which threats of violence cannot silence

30

the voice of any American.
